A Rainbow of Leaves: Coleus Plants

Today we wanted to shared with you another one of our favorite garden plants: Coleus Plants. We especially love this plant as it is durable and easy to grow. They are best known for their bright colors, and variety of foliage.

While this plant can survive in full sun, the foliage color tends to intensify in light shade. Also, as your plant grows, pinch the center stems back to help induce bushier growth. You will also want to pinch off the flower stems as they form as that will also encourage more foliage.

Coleus come in a number of shapes and colors, ranging from solid deep burgundies to magenta tipped with lime. With such variety, you can really have fun mixing and matching different varieties together or with other flowers and plants to vibrant effect.

In the video below, Harris shares with you his love for the very hearty and vivacious Coleus plant!

Create stunning landscapes with Dragon Wing Begonias!

Summer has officially started and we are loving all of the bright and beautiful annuals around our pond! Annuals plants, like their name implies, live only a year, but what a joy they are when they are in bloom. Dragon Wing Begonias are fantastic summer annuals because they mature quickly and will give your garden a nice splash of pink or red color. Dragon Wings fill in fast to form a lush garden bed or border that will last clear up to the first frost and always be full of breathtaking blooms! In the video below, Harris shares some more information about Dragon Wing Begonias and how to use them best. So plant some of these beauties and let us know what you think! Just a tip: Dragon Wings do best in areas of partial shade.

Harris’ Tour of The Dads’ English Style Garden!

How have your gardens come together this spring? Harris shares with you some of his ideas for easy to care for English style gardens!

For inspiration, use of Hostas adds for gentle borders or a dramatic effect! Coralbells sport airy flower spikes on wiry stems above low-growing, often dramatic foliage. For us, we feel the use of topiaries is especially wonderful in our historic home, as the art of topiary gardens date back to Roman times.

We feel that our gardens are a reflection of us as yours should be of you. Bottom line, design and plant what makes you happy! But now’s the time to get it done so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor all summer!

The Perfect Rose Centerpiece Made Easy!

In the video below, Harris uses white roses to demonstrate how to make a beautiful centerpiece. It’s important to ensure that your arrangement isn’t too tall. Anyone who has been to a wedding knows how frustrating it can be to try to talk to the other people at your table when there is a towering massive centerpiece. We always keep our arrangements short to encourage conversation which is important at any dinner party.

Making your own floral centerpiece can seem daunting, but using a flower arranging frog makes it so easy! The holes in the base evenly space the flowers. Frogs can be hard to find since they are fairly old-fashioned, but try popping by your nearest antique store or search online to inquire. There are modern versions as well! Buying your own flowers is much less expensive than purchasing a flower arrangement from a florist. So why not have some fun and create your own impressive centerpiece with them? Send us a picture of your homemade arrangements, we’d love to see your creativity!

The Dads’ Thanksgiving Reflection

We hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving! It’s been a couple of days now, and we’re finally starting to recover from the holiday fun and exhaustion!

Here is a list that we put together last night, reflecting our Post-Thanksgiving thoughts:

1. Wow, we’re exhausted!

2. Having all the family together is so heartwarming and feels good right down to the bone.

3. Sheesh, you can never do enough advance planning and preparation. When everyone arrives, it’s difficult to get anything done! You want to stop and listen to every story and be in every room with everyone, but you can’t.

4. Everyone wants to be with you, which is great; your kitchen however isn’t large enough to work efficiently with everyone underfoot.

5. This was our first year trying to film while cooking and having guests; wow, was that difficult. You just have no idea how much time filming and editing eats up. Suddenly your perfectly timed schedule is blown out of the water!

6. How did our parents do it when they had so many to feed every day and not just holidays? It looked so simple!

7. In our dream-home, the kitchen would be the largest room in the house; We’d even have a large fireplace so everyone feels comfy and cozy.

8. What to do with all the leftovers?? Lots of ideas but no appetite as we’ve all cheated so much on our diets! The biggest challenge are the desserts as they are the most tempting!

Like many of you, we carry on the tradition of having all of our guests go around the table and say what we’re most thankful for this year. Did you and/or your family do the same? What are you most thankful for?

Have a great holiday weekend!
-The Dads: Harris & Dave
